After graduating with a MA in Fine Arts at California State University Fullerton, Relth joined the commercial world. For 30 years, Tom Relth worked in a field outside the world of fine arts. First he created a design and graphics group and an advertising agency. Finally, he founded an international company in speciality printing equipment.
In 2003, Tom Relth worked in the Department of Arts, Biola University in Los Angeles. His lectures at Biola focused mainly on the relationship forged between East and West and related history of art influence. He created an artistic print studio in which students explored the traditional printing methods such as engraving, etching, woodcut and lithography.
Also in 2003, Relth returned to his true love: painting. He produced new paintings and explored new lands in his own artistic world. Tom Relth is now working on larger commercial-space sized works with acrylic paint, oil and mixed media, mixing both traditional and contemporary artistic techniques.
In 2008, he left the business world altogether to pursue a career in art teaching. For five years, Relth taught high school students in Casablanca, Morocco and continues to share his passion for art with students and contemporaries alike. During his tenure in Casablanca, Relth curated major exhibitions of contemporary art. During this time, Relth exhibited in collaboration with internationally known contemporary Moroccan artists and in solo exhibitions.
Relth currently makes his home and studio in Vancouver, Washington.
